Chili Ristras

In the Southwest, people make chile ristras by stringing red chiles together and hanging them up to dry. These ristras are used for cooking and as decorations in homes. Many people believe they bring good luck and show there’s plenty of food. They are especially popular in New Mexico, where their bright red color looks beautiful on houses.

To make red chile sauce, soak dried red chiles in hot water until they soften, then blend them with garlic, onion, and spices like cumin and oregano. Simmer the blended mixture on the stove with a little water or broth until it thickens into a smooth, flavorful sauce. Serve on everything!

Happy Holidays from all of us on The Children’s Hour!
