At The Aquarium

This time on The Children's Hour we head under the sea, to the Albuquerque Aquarium. Our program was recorded before a live audience in 2019 and features three of the aquarists. One swims with the sharks, another grows coral, and the third is the keeper of the aquarium's otters. We also hear a Nigerian folktale told by storyteller Ramona King. Mixed with great music, and featuring our Kids Crew & Katie.

This week on The Children's Hour, we explore the genre of science fiction with our musical friends from Ramah, New Mexico, MeriDean. This type of storytelling allows our imagination to become immersed in other worldly places, with advanced technologies, on exoplanets, or flying through space, and using actual science to help us believe the impossible. With excerpts of famous works of "Sci-Fi" like The War of the Worlds, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Slaughterhouse Five, and original pieces recorded by masterful storytellers, we immerse ourselves in futuristic fantasy.

Celebrating Indigenous People

This week on The Children’s Hour, we learn about Indigenous Peoples Day. Plus we are treated to live music from an all women mariachi band, Mariachi Flor del Alma, we’ve got a book review of Under The Cottonwood Tree, a new graphic novel for kids based on an ancient New Mexican folk tale, and the Extinction Diaries cover the bird die-off that happened late this summer in the southwestern United States.

Unpolluting Earth

This episode of The Children's Hour focuses on pollution, which is a problem around the globe, but there are ways to un-pollute dirty and contaminated places. How we do that is explained by chemist and journalist Dr. Marina Philip, and we check in with mycologist Peter McCoy from the world's first school for mycology, Mycologos about how mushrooms can transform some of our most toxic pollutants into building materials and more. We also hear from the kids in the Extinction Diaries about the problem of plastic pollution worldwide. Kids can help solve this international crisis and we learn how. This show is mixed with great music from the Beat Buds, Zee Avi, Mister G, One More Song, Ellis Paul, Earthworm Ensemble and more.
